you're a product, NPD or innovation professional working within the technical or manufacturing space.
chances are, you've got a technical background of some description, whether that be engineering, product design or informational architecture. Some people also come from a creative background, but you're probably a 'builder' of some sort.
you may be a designer at heart, and likely highly analytical as well as creative... your work is the reason companies have something to sell
if you're currently considering the next steps in your career, and specifically within technical or physical product management or design...
2023 has proven to be a very good year to do so, so far.
the demand for product designers and developers has been steadily increasing throughout the last few years. The increasing importance of user experience, user interface and design across all sectors is proving to bring product development right back to the forefront of C suite discussion... massively increasing demand for innovative product roles, at all levels
salary bandings have been steadily increasing also, leading to a much more positive increase in comparison to average market rates since 2020
key areas of development which have remained invaluable to UK based businesses have been product reinvention, design overhaul (and re brand), UX/UI assessment, informational architecture and cleaner/simplified app development.
Management of project flow, life cycle management and team leadership
are all still 'staples' within your average product and innovation role outline
it's become almost imperative to have a good depth of understanding of design software in the modern era, or at least one of the core packages like Adobe XD, Blender, Autodesk, SOLIDWORKS, Onshape, Axure, Sketch or Figma. The ever increasing suite of software available within our sector is resulting in an ever changing landscape when it comes to role requirements and variety... industry specific applications like Nuexo (for packaged goods) and CATIA (automotive) are just a couple of examples of packages being made to sit exactly where we need them for best in class design and modelling
what to take into consideration... in the current market?
when profiling new roles for product, NPD and innovation people, we should be looking at whether the life cycle of the product is inline with what you're looking to achieve within the next move, market saturation and current product value/positioning also.
finally... sustainability and where this might take you over the course of the next step, this a massive factor currently!
